Firing Services guidelines.

We offer outside firings in our electric kilns. We have 4 Skutt kilns, firing to mid-range temperatures.

Rates are simple
When you fire with us you are charged a fee per item for each firing (usually a bisque and a glaze).
You need to submit your inventory through this Google form. You will pay at drop off. Members and artists will have the option to either pay at time of drop off or make one payment each month to minimize the amount of transactions through an invoice.

We have made some changes to the firing fees and how to drop off. This form allows us to gain more information about your work, give contact information and allow you the opportunity to fill it out at home and keep track of what you are trusting us with.

$0.75 - Small: All dimensions are four inches or smaller - if the pieces can stack or fit inside something larger, we can accommodate the fees for this.
$1.00 - Medium: Any item with a dimension larger than 4.25” and less than 6”
$2.00 - Large: Any items with a dimension larger than 6.25” and less than 8”
$4.00 - XL: Any items with a dimension larger than 8.25” and less than 11”
$6.00 - XXL: Items with dimensions over 11.25” - Maximum size is 15” in any direction

The largest measurement for our kilns are 24". If dropping off work that large we will discuss as the cost will depend on the kiln load.

All Fees are NON-REFUNDABLE. If you drop off work and it is not fired because you do not meet the requested guidelines, we will not fire until the guidelines are met.

Fire your artwork with Tacoma Clay at your own risk. We cannot take responsibility for clay bodies that have flaws, including bloating, pinholing, or cracking. We rigorously maintain the kilns and watch the guard cones as the kilns reach peak temperatures. Should your work not turn out to your liking, please try again as it is a learning process.

We do our best to maintain equipment. At times there are unforeseeable difficulties and failures on the part of the equipment that could affect your artwork. By participating in the firing service, you acknowledge that this is part of the risk and the fun of ceramics. There is always a chance that the kiln gods will not smile on us and the artwork may be ruined.

All fired work will be dated with marker or a sharpie upon unloading of the kiln. The marker will fire off your work and the sharpie will wash off. Any work left longer than 30 days has the potential to be discarded.

Firing Temperatures & Materials
We are firing all bisque work to cone 06 and glaze work to cone 6. All of our studio clays sold in our shop are fired to these temperatures and pre-approved for firing. If you would like to fire materials not purchased at Tacoma Clay, we must approve the firing of those materials before you submit the work. We cannot guarantee glaze fit with outside materials as we have not been able to test these materials with our studio glazes and firing schedule.

Other things to note:

1. Our experienced staff will carefully load and unload your work to ensure proper firing and handling.

2. Our kilns are well-maintained and monitored to guarantee consistent and reliable results.

3. We ask that you ensure your pieces are completely dry, free of debris and properly labeled before bringing them in. It can be hard to find your work at pickup if we all do not know who it belongs to.

*We recommend you make test tiles to see how glazes perform with your clay. This will save you lots of heartache (and money) in the end. We want you to be happy with your piece.

4. We require all work to be picked up within 30 days of pick-up notification.

5. We cannot guarantee specific firing results due to the inherent variability of the ceramic process.

6. If major damage is caused as a result of work blowing up, pieces sticking to the shelf in glaze firings or any other random acts we will let you know. Should it be a result of your work we reserve the right to charge you. We will have a release for you to sign upon dropping off work.
